Are You a Pill Popper?
How do you spell relief? Do you spell it A-S-P-I-RI-N? Or V-A-L-I-U-M? Or M-O-T-R-I-N? Or T-Y-L-E-NO-L? There are literally thousands of ways to spell relief and it's spelled: D-R-U-G-S.
We swallow a lot of pills in this society. Why shouldn't we? We and our children are exposed to thousands of drug commercials all saying the same thing: it's good to take medicines. T.V. and radio commercials, newspaper and magazine advertisements, soap operas and prime time shows all say it's O.K. to take drugs because 'relief is just a swallow away'.
Is relief important? Of course it is. If you're in pain, or suffering, that's all you can think of: "Let me get rid of this headache", "If only the pain would go away", "I wish I could find a position that's comfortable", "If only the fever would break", "If only I could breathe freely" . . .none of us enjoys being uncomfortable. We want ease, not disease. Medicines are sometimes seen as little gems to those who know only agony and distress without them.
No one can question that there are times when medication is necessary and desirable. The accident victim, the burn victim, the terminally ill, the acute patient and others should receive the medication they need.
But What Of Grandma?
But what of the housewife who swallows painkillers for the headaches she's always getting? What of grandma who gulps down a dozen aspirins a day for her arthritis? What of people who swallow blood pressure medicines every day for years or the women who run to the medicine cabinet every month for menstrual pains? Or the friend, relative, co-worker, neighbor or classmate who cannot stand daily stress without valium, librium or alcohol?
According to the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, every twenty-four to thirty-six hours, from fifty to eighty percent of adults in the United States and the United Kingdom swallow a medically prescribed drug.
Does This Spell Health To You?
It might spell relief but are drugs making people healthier? Do drugs correct the cause of a person's problems or do they merely emporarily relieve symptoms? If drugs truly corrected health problems then they would only have to be taken once. But as soon as their effects wear off, the symptoms return and it's back to the pill bottles.
Do Drugs Make You Healthy?
If drugs made people healthy then those that take the most of them should be the healthiest of us, but it isn't so. They are
often the sickest. Sometimes the side effects of the drugs cause more problems than the original condition for which they were taken. Sometimes the drugs cause physical or psychological dependence on them. Sometimes they cause disease and sickness. Sometimes they even cause death. And all the time they take us away from depending on our natural healing ability and make us dependent on artificial supports.
Drugs Lie
Drugs lie to you. They take attention away from correcting the real problem: getting rid of the cause of the illness. The symptoms the drugs are covering up are often warning signals tellir)g you that something is wrong with your body. By constantly covering up the symptoms with medicines we may be ignoring what our body is telling us. While we take medicines to feel better our health may continue to deteriorate; and if it does we may start to take more powerful medicines to continue to hide the warning symptoms our body is giving us.
Alternatives To Drugs?
Is there an alternative to drug use? Chiropractic teaches us that true health does not come from a pill bottle, a lotion, a potion or some other chemical concoction. True health comes from within. Health is the expression of a body functioning properly. Chiropractors correct a very common condition that interferes with our body function causing it to weaken and become susceptible to disease and malfunction. That condition is called a vertebral (or spinal) subluxation. A subluxation occurs when stress alters our spines and interferes with our nervous system. Since the nerves control and regulate the body, and interf_rence to nerve health can cause widespread effects. It is often a painless condition at first, but it can cause much serious damage if it is not detected and corrected. Chiropractors spend four years of intense study learning how to analyze spines in order to locate and correct vertebral subluxations.
The World's Greatest Drug Store
The greatest drug store in the world is your own marvelous body. It manufactures every medicine you need: antibiotics, insulin, painkillers, chemicals to alter your blood pressure, heartbeat, moods, hormones to regulate your digestion, growth, blood chemistry, and hundreds of other drugs, many of which science has yet to discover. They're all there inside of you, if your body is working right.
And your marvelous internal drug store gives you the right amount of medication, at the right time, all the time, without paying extra for a prescription.
Correcting Subluxations
When chiropractors correct vertebral subluxations they help turn on your natural, internal 'drug store'. Correcting vertebral subluxations turns on your body's natural healing ability without side effects, adverse reactions or drug dependency.
Going to a chiropractor may do more for someone's internal chemical health than all the medicines in all the drugstores in the world. The next time you see someone living on medication, will you tell them about their internal drugstore? Will you tell them about chiropractic?
