Iowa State University & Buena Vista College
Iowa State:
The origins of Iowa State University can be traced to the formation of the State Agricultural Society at Fairfield, Iowa in 1853. This group petitioned the Iowa General Assembly in 1854 for $1000 annually to fund agricultural research and disseminate agricultural information throughout the state. With the aid of legislator Benjamin Gue, a bill allocating $20,000 for an agricultural college was introduced, approved, and signed into law in 1858, establishing the State Agricultural College and Model Farm.
Buena Vista:
Founded in 1891 by the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., Buena Vista University has grown to an enrollment of approximately 1,400 undergraduate and graduate students on its main campus in Storm Lake plus an additional 1,375 students at 17 branch sites throughout Iowa.
